FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Springfield Fire Department promotes residential sprinklers at HBA Home Show

Springfield -- The Springfield Fire Department will be at this weekend's HBA Home Show to promote residential fire sprinkler system, thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The grant provided funding for a display highlighting the benefits of a residential sprinkler system. The display includes a cut-out of a room showing the ease with which a sprinkler system can be installed. "Most people think  installing a sprinkler system is much more complicated than it actually is," said Assistant Chief of Prevention, Randy Villines. "One system, called a flow-through system serves a single fixture, such as a toilet in addition to the fire sprinklers. It's efficient, relatively inexpensive and could be a life-saver."

Every year, Springfield firefighters respond to nearly 250 residential fires. Three out of four of these are accidental and preventable. The Springfield Fire Department hopes the HBA Home Show display will help educate home owners and home builders about how residential fire sprinklers can help protect families.

During the event, attendees will learn:

  • Springfield offers incentives to developers interested in installing residential fire sprinkler systems.
  • In most instances, sprinklers only need to be installed in habitable areas, and do not need to be installed in attics, closets, or bathrooms.
  • In Springfield, homes can be furnished with a residential sprinkler system for around $1.13 per square foot.
  • City Utilities has given pre-approval for the flow through system.

The home show takes place at the Expo Center and runs Friday, January 29th, 4pm-7pm, Saturday, January 28, 10am-7pm and Sunday, January 29th, 11am-4pm. For more information, visit the HBA website. The Springfield Fire Department's booth will be staffed by Springfield Fire Department personnel.
